We recorded Sohagi Murmu nearly ten years ago while documenting Sohrai wall art. The song she sings refers to the aftermath of the Hul rebellion of 1855, when many rebel Santals were tried and sentenced by the British at colonial courts at Hazaribagh. The "Hahaal" at the end, sung in Hindi-Bengali mix here, is probably some sort of nonsense rhyme, created on the spot, by the orginal performer. It may have addressed a particular person in the group . But generally speaking, the Hahaal is a unique traditional Santal musical device consisting of catchy sounds or phrases shouted out to the rhythm of the drum beats, that instantly enliven and exhilarate both the performers and their audience.
