Pithey making is a popular ritual associated with the winter harvest festival in Eastern India. The main ingredient is rice flour, from the newly harvested rice. Unlike the usually sweet pithey, common to the rest of eastern India, the patara pithe is a special savoury made only on a particular day during the Sohrai festival. It is made from fried pork and rice powder. Our hosts were Lalu Tudu and his wife, Karlaboti. Sohrai song sung by Bhagyaboti Marndi, accompanied by Darishnath and Barilal Murmu on Huka Banam and Tirio (flute).
