The Buang is a primitive Santal drone instrument which emits a deep booming sound when plucked. The Buang is only played during the Dasae festival of the Santals, which coincides with the Durga Puja of the Bengalis, in the month of Ashwin (September-October). In the Santali language, this month is called Dasae. The Buang is predominantly used in Santal villages the southern parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha– comprising Medinipur, South Bankura, South Purulia, Singhbhum and Keonjhar respectively, where it is accompanied by the Buang dance.
