These unique measuring bowls have, for centuries, been made in only a single village in West Bengal - Lokepur in the Suri block of Birbhum district. Hence they are also known as Suri bowls. The bowls have long ceased to be used for measuring; they just about survive as decorative objects. Bholanath Karmakar, the son-in-law of the late master craftsman, Kartik Karmakar, along with the latter`s son and brother are the last artisans left today.
