The video is a quick overview of the making of traditional gomira masks at a workshop conducted by us, thanks to the Art for Hope 2025 grant from Hyundai Motor India Foundation. Nine trainees, either self taught mask makers or carpenters, benefitted from the training by two senior master Gomira mask artisans, Sachindranath Sarkar and Krishna Debsharma. In the last two decades or so, with an eye to commercialization and changing market demands, the traditional form of these masks began to change and became far removed from the aesthetics of the ritual masks. This project was an attempt to reintroduce to untrained artisans of Uttar DInajpur, the traditional look and feel of the craft. Gamhar wood, a soft wood was used for the masks and in recreating the authentic look, the artisans deliberately stayed away from glossy enamel paints. They used primarily natural colours instead, mixed with tamarind glue. The sound track for the video was made possible thanks to Kekai Debsharma, a blind singer, wandering in the vicinity.
