The Sherpai is an ornate traditional grain measuring bowl made of wood and bound and ornamented with brass. Once popular among rich farmers and zamindars of rural Bengal, these were later resurrected as smaller items of décor. However, the craft was endangered owing to the paucity of craftsmen - there is just the one artist, national award winner, Bholanath Karmakar, who actively practices this craft. Thanks to a grant from Hyundai Motors Art for Hope, 2023 we had the master artisan workshop with a few interns and initiate skill development. The bowls were also showcased at the Art for Hope exhibition in Delhi. The whole exercise also triggered off a process of awareness, appreciation and visibility of this endangered craft among a wider pan India audience. The video comprises excerpts of our documentation of the making of the Sherpai during the workshop.
