The Sarpa dance is performed by Santal women during their Sohrai festival. However, the practice is mostly restricted to Santals in Pashchim and Purba Medinipur districts along with southern parts of Bankura and Purulia. The women of the village dance in front of the Manjhi`s home and are usually given some grain as a reward. In this song, the women are looking for the Manjhi`s hoime, or else the home of his assistant, the Gudit. Reference is also made to the other members of the village council, headed by the Manjhi.
